Advertising Budget: How Much is Too Much?

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

A frequently asked question among my clients is, “How much of my particular income should go over to marketing? What is a standard marketing budget?” Accountants and other analysts out there are always analyzing what is standard and what is good. Where they get their data about what is ‘right’, I don’t know and 99.9% is incorrect. How much do you spend on marketing? How much do you spend on dental website marketing? As much as it takes to move up and get people into your business.

If that is six times what you are making now, so be it. Am I joking? I am absolutely not joking. Do you usually need that? No, not really. But then again maybe yes especially if you are making little money right now. That is what it will take.

Several times, I have been around the world and studied some business while working for other companies. One similarity I noticed among the successful companies was that none of them had a budget of a limit for their marketing.

The more you market, the more successful you are likely to be, period. It’s a little bit like when you are sick. How much of the doctor’s bill should you pay? When I started my business, how much money did I make? Zero. How much did I spend on marketing? It didn’t matter, whether I spent $400 or $4000 it was more than what I made because I made nothing.

I once had a client who owned a dental practice in Los Angeles. He was spending quite a bit on advertising when he first started his business.

Flyers, coupons, internet dental marketing, stuff like that. I met him 12 or 13 years later, when he became my client.

At that point in time he no longer did any of those types of things. I asked him, ” Why did you stop, did it not work?” He said no, it worked, it brought people in.

He said that he advertised alot when he first opened his practice, just to get people in. However, he stopped marketing because he was told by other ‘experts’ that he should not be spending so much money! Then he paid me to tell him to start marketing again, which he did.

There are, however, many different inexpensive ways of dental advertising and internet dental marketing. There are even free ways of getting other people to promote your message from you. We called this ‘Un-Advertising’.

Business Management: What is the Right Marketing Budget?

Friday, March 11th, 2011

The social media network is somewhat new to the scene of marketing. Let’s gear it towards public relations and how to get press releases. As you probably saw on the video on my site, media is not the almighty advertising source for your dental advertising . It is true, media is powerful and getting media is something you want. . But do not put all your eggs in one basket when it comes to getting your own free press, there are many other community leaders who can give you publicity without going directly through media sources. Social networks are one of those other options . How do you make use of social media to add more to your internet dental marketing?

In the past, you used to need to seek out a reporter and try to get an article out of a local newspaper. Now, reporters are actually disappearing. I personally think that there is a chance that in our lifetime, reporters will have more or less disappeared.

No matter the case, reporters are less important now than they were in the past. Why? You can go directly to the public through online social media networks and it is as powerful as a press release printed by another paper. I am not saying that this trend of online exposure can replace the New York Times, but most likely if you are for instance, a dentist, you are not getting into the New York Times anyhow for your local community news. It is much more likely that you would be getting into smaller papers in your area that will print your story. These papers are still important even though more and more news is being “reported” on the internet. .

Social media networks are able to connect directly with the customer. How is that happening? There are many social media websites. Facebook and Twitter are just two and there are hundreds of other ones that are broadcast and are basically syndicated radio stations, only on the internet. Information that is put onto these social media sites travels by itself with no reporters needed for the information to flow. Social media sites are even where today’s reporters are going to look for information Even if the main stream media don’t pick you up, there are key players in these communities and in many fields. These key players are bloggers and you will be going on those sites, with a blog and they distribute your information through their own community of followers which could be hundreds or thousands. Also, the public at large goes there. This new way of internet public relations doesn’t mean the old way is gone but the reporters are going to those sites to look for what is “cool” right now, and that makes sense. Instead of getting a sales pitch from a public relations agent, they are using social media to see what the community is beating the drums for these days.

Whether you are a dentist and would like to use free resources for your dental marketing, or a restaurant owner wanting to get your news to more people in your local community, use social media sites ( videos, articles sites etc) to publish your news.

How to Use Blue Tooth Marketing for your Health Care Practice or any Other Small Business which Operates in a Local Market

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

First you might want to know what blue tooth marketing actually is and how it works in principle on a technical level.

These days about 85 percent of all phones are blue tooth enabled. This does not mean that the user is actually using the blue tooth, but it means that the phone has the capability to be paired with a blue tooth. In short it can receive the signal.

A new device is now available on the market called “Instant Text Ping” which will signal all Bluetooth enabled phones in a particular area.

This device will send a message without needing the phone number to any blue tooth enabled phone in an approximate range of 100 ft, which the receiver can accept or decline.

If the prospect declines he will never be bothered by us (you) again.

If he accepts, then well he is interested in your offer and the possibilities are almost endless.

  • By the way you do NOT pay for sending a message and the receiver does NOT pay anything either.
  • You do NOT even need a normal cell phone signal as your message does not use any phone carrier but speaks directly to the phone.
  • You also are NOT stealing the person’s identity such a phone number etc, but only can connect to the phone if it is in YOUR range of broadcasting.
  • It’s a bit like radio where you will receive only when you are in range. The only big difference is that in our case the person can actually respond IF he or she is interested.

ALL YOU NEED IS TO BE IN 100 FT VICINITY OF PEOPLE WHO COULD /SHOULD USE YOUR SERVICE. CROWDS SUCH AS YOU WILL SEE IN SHOPPING CENTERS, FARMER’S MARKETS, STRIP MALLS, MOVIE THEATERS, SPORTS EVENTS, IN FRONT OF YOUR OFFICE, IN YOUR OFFICE, CHURCHES - IN SHORT ANY PLACE WHERE THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE IN THE GEOGRAPHIC AREA FROM WHERE YOU DRAW BUSINESS FROM(usually 10 miles for most businesses).

The big companies by the way ARE using it – BMW, Audi, Virgin Media, Miller beer and even the army uses it for recruiting new people and police departments use this technology to chase down criminals.

Here are two, but extremely important reasons of why this method is so wonderful and effective:

  • You will be able to contact a highly target market in super large quantities.
  • The sending of message is literally free except the price of the device which is very affordable and probably will come back within a week if not a few weeks.

Here are some examples which should trigger dozens and dozens of ideas in your mind for your product or service in your area as well as fitting your personality.

  • Targeted audience can be reached because the prospect happens to be in your area. Whether you are a restaurant owner, a car mechanic, a dentist, a gas station owner etc, we are talking about YOU capturing the prospects that happen to be walking by your place of business or even already in your business.

You may not want to rely on your staff to ‘remember’ to tell customers a certain message. But if you have Instant Text Ping, any and all customers that walk into your office, or walk by your store front, will get a ‘ping’ on their cell phones and thus your messages can be delivered literally 7 days a week, 24 hours a day – beyond your office hours!

  • Targeted could also be because you place this device exactly in public places where your prospects are. For instance, if I wish to market to dentists for my marketing consulting services, I could have any “not-so-bright high school dropout” standing at or near the entrance of any and all dental association meetings and conventions around the country and the Instant Text Ping device would contact all of them with a very specific message. I would not spend a single cent in advertising!
  • What about the flea market or the farmer’s market in the close vicinity? Lot’s of people and you could reach hundreds and even thousands of people for literally no cost. You can custom design the message such as the case of a farmer’s market where people are somewhat health conscious and would be impressed with a message which states:
“Message From Northridge Farmer’s Market: Eating healthy food is super important of keeping a health body but also for healthy teeth. Did you know that a bad diet can cause a lowered immune system and thus increase the risk of gum diseases? Get a $39 cleaning, X-ray and exam (reg. $ 215) to be sure to keep any potential gum disease away from you! Go to web site www.XYZ.com”
  • Can you imagine doing something like that in front of about 3 – 5 churches every Sunday and some times during the week, as there will be different parishioners? What do you think if you advertise your community involvement programs and/or your specials at those churches? Church members love to help, and they surely are not all poor as some might want to suggest.
  • What about reaching high end prospects? Go to the high end shopping-mall in front of the jewelry store or the nearby Mercedes dealer. What about where the high end gyms or restaurants are in your area?
  • Did I mention health fairs? Not that you could not have a booth at many of those fairs, and shows (I would not suggest the expensive restaurant strip though) but having a booth is costly and demands manning it and will not draw the same attention, not even close, as the Instant Text Ping message.
  • Treat or sell stuff for children? What about the places parents hang out, such as the parents’ meetings at schools, the kids’ playgrounds, or the daycare centers? Would the local little league, or any youth sport team such as the martial arts classes do? All you need is be in the vicinity with your device and bingo.J Imagine being at the Laker’s game, and being able to have many people seeing your message for your product and service! It is what I call stealing the show.

By the way normally stadiums are a rather bad place to get phone reception due to too many phones in the place, but as said above you do not need reception. You are your own broadcaster. And what if they don’t let you in with your broadcast device? No problem, you (or the not-so-bright high school dropout that you have hired) can just quietly hang around the exit / entrance, or parking lots and catch them as they come and go.

Just don’t go to a rock and roll club where 18 year olds hang out if you are selling Rolls Royce or Rolex watches. If you sell Rolexes you want to stroll through all the Ritz Carlton’s and Four Season’s of this world and include the seven stars — in Dubai and/or all the exotic car rental and car dealerships, as well as the appropriate shows and conventions and even just drive through Beverly Hills amongst another hundred such cities. It’s really quite simple if you think about it. As said before, your imagination on where and how will be the only limitation.

OK, I hope I have made you understand the unlimited ramification of how the Instant Text Ping can be used.

Did you know that there are police departments in Europe (I got the idea and device from Europe on one of my trips back home) which are using this system to find a perpetrator of a crime minutes after the crime was committed?

Yes and look how it is done.

Murder or burglary happens on Main Street and Fifth Avenue. Police takes a few of those systems and cruises around the area pinging everyone in sight with:

Police alert!! Burglary on Main Street & 5th. Suspects wear blue shirt. Long blond hair, Male 30 – 40 years old, limping. Please contact 911 immediately.

What about this next one?

Lost pet alert! Young German shepherd – dark hair – with almost white paws, goes by the name of Troyan. Does not bite but likes to bark. Was last seen at corner of main street and 5th. Likes to eat old pizza. Please call 818 000 0000 or call 911 thanks – reward is $500.

As Bill Gates, the richest man in the world said in his book of 1996 or so “Business at the speed of thought”, “Speed is power!!” You bet it is. Speed is super important in all of life’s endeavors — be it karate, boxing, fast food, new technologies, new inventions etc.

Alright, I hope this article is informative on using high tech tools to market inexpensively.

Keep in mind, the device is great ( I currently owned one myself and will be ordering another 200 units for my sales reps across the country to sell to local businesses) however, I know that it by itself will not give me all the business in the world to greatly expand my business.

Marketing is synergistic, so never never put all your marketing efforts only on 1 method! Not using other marketing strategies like social media, email marketing, video marketing, PR etc and depending only on 1 device is ‘suicidal’

So even though I am tooting the horn on this technology, it does not mean you should put all your focus on this device and forget about everything else.

This device will help you reach prospects in places where you normally could not – without spending money on flyers and ads. So it is an additional tool for your message to be picked up ‘everywhere’ by prospects.

The retail price goes up to $5000 a piece for the machine. Some of you may need 2 or 3 devices so that you can have the devices operating around the clock at different locations.

We have found a manufacturer who could give us great discounts for bulk order.

I have negotiated a 20% off for our own group order – only $3900.

In addition to owning the machine, leasing options are available too at only $500 a month. (No credit checks. Month to month contract.)

If you would like to get the device, contact your consultants and let them know that you would like to be part of the group purchase discount.

I will be placing the order in the coming week.

The device can and probably will pay for itself in a month or two. (How many patients do you need to pay for $3900 or $500 a month?)

By the way, some large companies are already using these technologies:

I personally love it! I am in marketing one way or another for about 40 years in 12 countries, four continents and dozens of industries, and let me tell you, I have not seen anything like this!
