Steve Droke said, “Knowledge is power and enthusiasm pulls the switch.”
Oh, boy, isn’t that true!
Bill Gates says, “The thing I do best is sell enthusiasm.” He does not mean he is always enthusiastic (which he probably is most of the time). He means he makes others enthusiastic about what he is doing and this way, they will be on his side!
The greatest marketing plan executed lamely and done half-heartedly will do much worse than a bad plan performed with lots of enthusiasm.
In the book ‘Winning’ by Jack Welsh, the retired and former CEO of more than twenty years in General Electric, it talked about how Mr. Welsh gave meetings to his staff about the dreams and goals of the company or about a specific project till he himself sometimes got tired of repeating himself.
Needless to say that someone like Jack Welsh would be doing this with some sort of enthusiasm.
Mr. Welsh actually said that he did this to get enthusiastic support for the project and he mentioned why most managers and business owners did not do this often enough.
He said that every manager had had projects he was enthusiastic about and which this manager had promoted widely amongst his staff, but the project somehow failed.
This was looked at as having egg on your face. Its somewhat shameful to most of the managers.
Thus they kept quiet about their next project.
This of course would only make more of the projects failing.
How could any manager think that he would get a project on the way and succeeding if he did not have the full enthusiastic support of his staff?
It is difficult enough to succeed in anything with all the support and all the enthusiasm in the world, but without it, it is almost impossible.
It becomes a Russian roulette at best.
Nothing in this article about enthusiasm says that one should not have sound business plans, scientific methodology and the entire how-to steps in place.
One must.
All I am saying is that without enthusiasm the best product or the best service with a great marketing plan, even with knowledgeable people working those project has an infinite chance of failing.
Only people with a burning fire under their butt will make things go right.
Well, you ask, but if those enthusiastic people have no knowledge about the project in question then that project will still fail, because the exact how-to steps cannot be avoided.
As an example, no matter how enthusiastic one is, if one is not a doctor or a rocket scientist one cannot perform an operation or send a rocket to the moon.
Whoever is making such a statement or asking such a question is right.
However, he or she is right to degree that they are missing enthusiasm.
The non-enthusiastic doctor or rocket scientist will give up working through a difficult situation, he will usually fold his hands and say, “I did all I could”
He will say ‘we do not have the resources etc.’
He will simply not get that rocket to the moon.
On the other hand, the enthusiastic manager who does not know heart surgery or rocket science will, by proven statistic, find a way to hire or train the right people.
It can easily be proven that former president J.F. Kennedy was not a rocket scientist and yet he was enthusiastic about the space program and he was willing and able to talk about his dream to the whole country. He built an enthusiasm for this program which made us winning the race against Russia.
The world was and is winning because of Mr. Kennedy’s willingness to spread enthusiasm. He was willing to talk about it like Mr. Welsh said it must be done to have a chance of succeeding.
I hope you get the point.
Enthusiastic people will find alternative solutions if needed, where the unenthusiastic person will say, “It cannot be done.” The unenthusiastic person will say “too many obstacles”, “too difficult” and he will sell everyone, and even himself, that the idea is simply not worth the effort or that it is even dangerous.
They will resort to their expertise in giving you the above explanations.
The world is full with smart, knowledgeable, talented people.
The worlds’ leading companies and the worlds’ reigning world champions in any sports exist because of the enthusiasm of some individual.
Sometimes those enthusiastic leaders are also smart, knowledgeable and talented, but in many cases they simply surround themselves with smart knowledgeable people, in which they of course instill plenty of enthusiasm!
Enthusiasm is life!
